Summer gigs and practice

Friday, 9th August, 2013

While teaching has died down a little for the summer, I have a good opportunity to concentrate mainly on gigs, to work on new tunes and to tweak areas of my trumpet playing and improvisation. So far, it’s been very busy on the gig front, I’ve been playing with Alligator Gumbo, various other smaller projects and Kabuki Wedding and Party band, who are playing at The Hop, Leeds tonight.

With so many gigs and the desire to practice hard, one has to make sure to keep rest periods in mind. Playing trumpet is very much like most other physical endeavors, by increasing the work load gradually, the body’s ability improves..but only when sufficient recovery time is allowed for. Care should be taken when increasing your workload – if you do too much, with insufficient recovery, your performance will suffer – a truth I am so very often reminded of!
